Circumcision Methods

Traditional Cut vs. Plastibell (Ring)

We explain the 2 most common types of circumcision used for babies and infants below:

Traditional Cut

The foreskin is separated with a clamp/forceps, and then surgically removed with a blade or cautery.

A couple of sutures may or may not be needed.

👇 Parents who have researched the options or have heard stories from friends often prefer:

Traditional Cut Method, because:

  • It gives an immediate result — no ring left on the penis

  • There’s no need to return to have anything removed

  • It avoids issues like retained rings, swelling from delayed separation, or worry about whether the Plastibell has fallen off properly

  • Aftercare is often simpler and shorter

forceps guided circumcision

Plastibell (Ring) Circumcision

The foreskin is separated, and then a plastic ring (Plastibell or Circumplast) is inserted on top the the glans (head of the penis), but under the foreskin.

A string is then tied very tight to disrupt the blood supply.

The foreskin then dies and falls off with the ring between 3-12 days.

Sometimes the ring may get stuck and a repeat visit may be needed to cut the ring off.

The cosmetic result is not immediate as you have to wait for the foreskin to die, separate from the shaft, and fall off with the ring.

There is a higher risk of post-op bleeding as any friction can dislodge the ring and cause bleeding.

The ring can slip down and cause and emergency.

traditional cut v plastibell method

At Circumcision Centre Ireland, we use the traditional cut method for baby circumcision, to reduce the chance of complications and make the aftercare process faster and easier for parents. No rings, no waiting, no return visits — just safe, professional care and a clear result on the day.

Had an amazing experience with this clinic. The place was spotless and the assistant was really kind and helpful throughout the whole process. From the minute we checked in till the end they were super supportive. The doctor came out and explain the whole procedure and how it will go. They’ve reassured everything is going fine throughout and walked us through the after care and showed how to do it! Overall had 10/10 experience and highly recommend them to anyone looking to get their kid circumcised.

The procedure itself usually takes just a few minutes. Including preparation and aftercare review, you can expect to be in the clinic for about 45 minutes.
