Circumcision Methods

Traditional Cut vs. Plastibell (Ring)

We explain the 2 most common types of circumcision used for babies and infants below:

Plastibell (Ring) Circumcision

At Circumcision Centre Ireland, we offer baby circumcision using the trusted ring method (Plastibell or Circumplast device). This is one of the most widely used techniques for newborn circumcision, offering a quick, precise, and gentle procedure with minimal handling of delicate tissue.

During the procedure, the foreskin is gently separated from the head (glans) of the penis. A small plastic ring is carefully placed over the glans and under the foreskin. A fine surgical string is tied securely around the foreskin, cutting off its blood supply. This ensures the foreskin naturally separates and falls away with the ring, usually within 3–12 days.

Traditional Cut

The foreskin is separated with a clamp/forceps, and then surgically removed with a blade or cautery.

A couple of sutures may or may not be needed.

  • More suitable for:

  • Older infants/children who are not suitable for ring method

  • A cut is made, stitches may or may not be needed

  • Often more bleeding and swelling

  • No ring present, but recovery slightly longer/more sore than plastibell ring.

🧸 Important Considerations for Baby Circumcision

While circumcision is a routine and straightforward procedure at our clinic, it’s important that parents understand their vital role in both the success of the procedure and the healing process.

🩹 Aftercare Is a Parent’s Responsibility

Following the procedure, your role in supporting proper healing is crucial:

  • Keep the area clean and dry as advised

  • Apply creams or Vaseline according to instructions

  • Use snug, well-fitting nappies to avoid unnecessary friction

  • Be gentle when cleaning or changing nappies to avoid trauma to the surgical site

  • Monitor for signs of bleeding or swelling and contact us if you’re unsure

  • Discourage toddlers from running or jumping for the first few days, as this can disrupt healing

Remember: most complications arise not during the procedure but due to post-procedure trauma. Your care at home makes all the difference.

😢 Will My Baby or Toddler Cry?

Yes, babies and toddlers often cry during circumcision, even when local anaesthetic is used. The anaesthetic blocks pain, but children may still cry due to:

  • The injection itself

  • Sensation of touch or movement

  • Being hungry, windy, cold, or in an unfamiliar position

Younger babies tend to be easier to soothe, while older infants and toddlers are more likely to become distressed simply due to awareness and emotional reactivity.

Below is a summary of typical behavioural responses based on age:

Age Group Typical Behaviour During Procedure
Under 2 Months Usually calm; may cry briefly due to hunger, wind, or discomfort. Easily soothed with dummy, feeding, or rocking.
2–6 Months More aware of surroundings; may cry intermittently despite no pain. Crying is typically from anxiety or restraint.
6–9 Months Harder to distract; crying is common throughout, even without pain. Increased awareness and stronger emotional response.
9 Months to 5 Years Highly likely to scream or resist despite numbness. Emotional distress is strong; not routinely recommended unless medically necessary.

Had an amazing experience with this clinic. The place was spotless and the assistant was really kind and helpful throughout the whole process. From the minute we checked in till the end they were super supportive. The doctor came out and explain the whole procedure and how it will go. They’ve reassured everything is going fine throughout and walked us through the after care and showed how to do it! Overall had 10/10 experience and highly recommend them to anyone looking to get their kid circumcised.

FAQ

Your Questions Answered!

We understand that circumcising your son can be a big decision to take, and be a daunting experience.  We aim to clarify the main questions you may have:

We perform circumcisions for all ages. However, the best recommended age is as soon as possible after birth, between 1-4 weeks.

We use local anaesthetic to numb the area and minimise discomfort during the procedure.  The injection for this will be uncomfortable, however procedure will be painless.. Some mild discomfort in the first 24–48 hours is normal, and we provide full aftercare instructions to help manage this.

It depends on their age.

  • Under 2 months: Most babies remain calm or cry briefly. They’re easy to distract and settle.

  • 2–6 months: Babies may cry intermittently but are usually manageable with comfort techniques.

  • Over 6 months: Crying is more frequent and difficult to settle.

  • Over 9 months to 5 years: Expect strong crying or screaming throughout the procedure — even though the area is numb. This is due to fear and unfamiliar surroundings, not pain.

At Circumcision Centre Ireland, we always take gentle, age-appropriate steps to minimise distress, but parental preparation and realistic expectations are key.

The procedure itself usually takes just a few minutes. Including preparation and aftercare review, you can expect to be in the clinic for about 45 minutes.
