What does baby circumcision involve?

  • Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin.

  • At CCI, babies under 1 year are circumcised using the Plastibell method, which is widely recognised for its safety in infants.

  • For children over 1 year, we use the traditional cut method, as the Plastibell can sometimes lead to complications in older children.

  • All procedures are carried out in a sterile clinic environment by an IMC-registered surgeon.

Is circumcision safe for babies?

  • Yes, circumcision is generally considered a safe procedure when performed by a trained medical professional.

  • Globally, complications are very low (2–4%).

  • Risks include minor bleeding, infection, or delayed healing — all rare when carried out in a sterile environment.

  • The biggest safety factor is who performs the circumcision and where (clinic vs home).

How do we manage pain?

  • A local anaesthetic injection is used to numb the area.

  • Babies are comforted during the procedure and can feed during or immediately afterwards.

  • Most babies cry more from being swaddled than from pain.

  • Aftercare with Calpol (paracetamol) and Vaseline ensures comfort.

Benefits of circumcision for babies

  • Reduced risk of infections (urinary tract infections are more common in uncircumcised boys).

  • Long-term improved hygiene.

  • Religious and cultural fulfilment.

How to choose a safe circumcision clinic in Ireland

  • Always ensure the doctor is IMC-registered and experienced in baby circumcisions.

  • Ask what method is used (cut vs Plastibell).

  • Check reviews and aftercare policies.

  • Choose a clinic that provides emergency support.

Aftercare and recovery

  • The plastibell ring usually falls off between 7-10 days.

  • Most babies heal at around 2 weeks.

  • Vaseline prevents the wound sticking to nappies.

  • Bathing can start after 24 hours and should be continued daily after this to keep the area clean.

  • Important aftercare instructions are given to prevent pressure on the penis whilst holding your baby.
