What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a simple surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin (prepuce) from the head of the penis. It is a common practice among Muslim, Jewish, and some Christian communities, and also carried out for medical, cultural, or hygiene-related reasons.

In Islamic tradition, circumcision is considered an act of cleanliness (taharah) and part of the fitrah — the natural practices encouraged for every Muslim.

It may also be referred to by various cultural terms such as:

  • Khitna (خِتَان) – Arabic

  • Khatna – Commonly used in South Asia

  • Sunat – Used in Southeast Asia (e.g., Indonesia, Malaysia)

  • Tahur – In some North African regions

While the name may vary by language or region, the intent and importance remain the same — to fulfil a religious obligation with dignity, hygiene, and proper care.

At Circumcision Centre Ireland, we approach circumcision not only as a medical procedure but also with an understanding of its religious and cultural meaning. Our goal is to ensure the process is safe, respectful, and comfortable for both the child and the family.

Best time for Muslim Circumcision?

The best time to perform circumcision is generally within the first few weeks of a baby’s life, ideally within the first month. At this age:

  • The procedure is technically simpler

  • Healing is quicker

  • Babies experience minimal discomfort

  • There is usually less crying and easier distraction

Many Muslim families also choose this time to align with Sunnah practice, as some scholars recommend circumcision within the first 7 days, while others advise it be completed before puberty.

We encourage parents to consult with us early, so we can assess the best method and timing based on your child’s age and health.

📍 If your child is older, don’t worry — we regularly perform circumcision for children and teens, and will guide you through the safest option.

🕰️ Best Time for Muslim Circumcision

✅ First 7 Days (Sunnah Preference)

Many Islamic scholars recommend circumcision on or around the 7th day after birth, aligning with Sunnah practices and tradition.

✅ Within the First Month

From a medical perspective, this is the ideal window. Healing is faster, babies are easier to soothe, and the procedure is technically simpler.

✅ Before 6 Months

Still considered early. Plastibell is usually an option. Baby may cry more, but recovery is quick and straightforward.

✅ Toddler to Teen Years

Still medically safe, but requires different methods (e.g. traditional cut and stitch). Child must be cooperative. Healing takes a little longer.

💬 Our Advice

We recommend circumcision in the first few weeks if possible. If your child is older, don’t worry — we’ll guide you to the safest and most appropriate method for their age.

Circumcision Methods

Traditional Cut vs. Plastibell (Ring)

We explain the 2 most common types of circumcision used for babies and infants below:

Plastibell (Ring) Circumcision

👶 For Newborns & Infants (Up to ~12 Months):

At Circumcision Centre Ireland, we offer baby circumcision using the trusted ring method (Plastibell or Circumplast device). This is one of the most widely used techniques for newborn circumcision, offering a quick, precise, and gentle procedure with minimal handling of delicate tissue.

During the procedure, the foreskin is gently separated from the head (glans) of the penis. A small plastic ring is carefully placed over the glans and under the foreskin. A fine surgical string is tied securely around the foreskin, cutting off its blood supply. This ensures the foreskin naturally separates and falls away with the ring, usually within 3–12 days.

Traditional Cut

🧒 For Older Babies & Children

The foreskin is separated with a clamp/forceps, and then surgically removed with a blade or cautery.

A couple of stitches may or may not be needed.

  • More suitable for:

  • Older infants/children who are not suitable for ring method

  • A cut is made, stitches may or may not be needed

  • No ring present

forceps guided circumcision

Had an amazing experience with this clinic. The place was spotless and the assistant was really kind and helpful throughout the whole process. From the minute we checked in till the end they were super supportive. The doctor came out and explain the whole procedure and how it will go. They’ve reassured everything is going fine throughout and walked us through the after care and showed how to do it! Overall had 10/10 experience and highly recommend them to anyone looking to get their kid circumcised.
