Child Circumcision in Dublin

At Circumcision Centre Ireland (CCI), we’re proud to offer circumcision for older children and teenagers, including boys aged 5 and up. Our clinic provides a safe, supportive, and experienced environment for families, with procedures carried out by Dr Wani, our IMC Registered Surgeon.

We understand this is a significant moment for both parents and children — and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Method Used: Forceps-Guided (Traditional Cut & Stitch)

We use the forceps-guided method, often referred to as the traditional “cut and stitch” circumcision. This approach is more appropriate for older children and teens, as the Plastibell (ring) method is not suitable at this stage of development.

🔹 Key Advantages:

  • Immediate removal of the foreskin — no waiting for a ring to fall off

  • A clean, tidy cut using thermocautery, which reduces bleeding

  • Stitches may or may not be required, depending on anatomy

  • Performed under local anaesthetic — no general anaesthetic needed

  • Your child will feel no pain, which we demonstrate before starting.

🔹 Considerations:

  • The only discomfort will be the sting of the local anaesthetic injection
  • The glans (head of penis) may be sensitive for a few days to weeks following the procedure.
  • Some younger children may not be co-operative as they are awake for the procedure.
  • Children should be prepared by parents for attending the clinic. It is not the job of the clinical staff to tell them for the first time why they have come.
  • Some children with learning difficulties may struggle with cooperation and sedation or delaying the circumcision may be more appropriate.
  • Children needing circumcision for medical reasons (phimosis) are unsuitable for circumcision under local anaesthetic. This is due to the increased sensitivity of scar tissue, even under local anaesthetic. Sedation or general anaesthetic is recommended in these cases.

Important Note:
Although the procedure itself is straightforward, it requires cooperation from the child as they will be awake. If a child is very anxious, unable to stay still or very distressed, the procedure may not be possible under local anaesthetic.  In this case opting for sedation, or delaying the circumcision is more appropriate.

Aftercare and Recovery

We provide verbal and written aftercare instructions, as well as direct messaging access for support after the procedure. Recovery includes:

  • Wearing tight-fitting briefs for support

  • Avoiding running, jumping, or physical play for 2 weeks

  • Keeping the area clean and dry

  • Using any recommended creams or pain relief

Healing typically takes 1–2 weeks, with full cosmetic recovery over a few more weeks depending on individual healing.

Had an amazing experience with this clinic. The place was spotless and the assistant was really kind and helpful throughout the whole process. From the minute we checked in till the end they were super supportive. The doctor came out and explain the whole procedure and how it will go. They’ve reassured everything is going fine throughout and walked us through the after care and showed how to do it! Overall had 10/10 experience and highly recommend them to anyone looking to get their kid circumcised.

FAQ

Your Questions Answered!

We understand that circumcising your son can be a big decision to take, and be a daunting experience.  We aim to clarify the main questions you may have:

We offer circumcision for all ages at Circumcision Centre Ireland.  This includes  boys aged 5 years and older.  Ages between 1-5 can be challenging and every case is assessed separately.

We use the forceps-guided (cut and stitch) method. It provides an immediate result and is better suited to the anatomy of older children, where the Plastibell ring is no longer appropriate.

Yes. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, meaning your child will be awake but will not feel pain. We demonstrate this before starting to reassure both the child and parent.

Stitches are sometimes required, depending on the anatomy and surgical outcome. We will explain this during your consultation.  Any stitches used will be dissolvable.

Yes, the procedure is very safe when performed by an experienced surgeon. Local anaesthetic completely numbs the area, and we use distraction methods like video games to help your child stay calm.

Circumcision is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced specialist. Minor risks include:

  • Swelling or bruising (which usually subsides within a few days)
  • Minor bleeding/spots
  • Infection (rare – reduced by following aftercare advice)

We do our best to keep children calm and comfortable. However, if a child is extremely anxious or cannot stay still, the procedure may need to be postponed or referred for sedation, or general anaesthetic. This will be assessed at the time of consultation.

Uncooperative children, some children with learning difficulties and children with phimosis are not suitable for circumcision under local anaesthetic and sedation or general anaesthesia may be more appropriate.
